Road and Cross Country Training

Road and Cross Country training is based out of the clubhouse in Victoria Park. The sessions are:

  • Tuesday, 7pm: Speed work with Mick Cairns. All abilities welcome.
  • Thursday, 7pm: Long run (4 miles, 6 miles or 10 miles). All abilities welcome.
  • Sunday, 9:30am: Long run. Please check the noticeboard for details.

Circuit Training

Circuit training is led by Tony Bunbury at the clubhouse in Victoria Park on Mondays at 7pm. All abilities are welcome.

Track and Field Training

Track and Field training occurs at Mile End Stadium. The sessions are as follows:

  • Tuesday, 6:30pm: Sprints, throws, jumps, hurdles, pole vault (summer only).
  • Tuesday, 7:30pm: Middle and long-distance interval session.
  • Thursday, 6:30pm: Sprints, throws, jumps, hurdles, pole vault (summer only).

Youth Training

Introducing young people to running, throwing and jumping is one of our most important goals. Most will never be international athletes, but we can all have fun, get fitter and make new friends. Once you are involved with the Club we can provide coaching in every field of athletics. Once with the club if you have a particular talent it will get noticed and we will be able to feed you through to top international coaching and support schemes. If you do well at school in athletics do join with us to nurture your talent in a way that will never be possible through school alone.

Club coaching sessions are as follows:

Tuesday evenings

All track and field athletics skills at Mile End Stadium.

  • 6:30 – 7:30 pm: Under 13s (ask for Dennis Ali).
  • 7:00 – 8:00 pm: Over 13s (ask for Chris Zah or Kelvin Richards).
  • 6:30 – 8:00 pm: Under 17s endurance training: cross country, road running, middle distance (ask for Spencer Walker).

Thursday evenings

All track and field athletics skills at Mile End Stadium.

  • 6:30 – 7:30 pm: Under 13s (ask for Dennis Ali).
  • 7:00 – 8:30 pm: Over 13s (ask for Chris Zah or Kelvin Richards).
  • 6:30 – 8:30 pm: Under 17s endurance training: cross country, road running, middle distance (ask for Spencer Walker).

Sunday mornings

Spencer Walker also holds a training session for U17 middle distance on Sunday mornings at Mile End Stadium from 10 am to 12.30 pm.

Please note that further specialist training is available to those who prove their commitment.

Youth Competition

If you join the Club, we aim to provide a minimum programme of one race per month. Through the winter we do cross-country and road running offering races in the Chingford League. In the summer we mainly focus on stadium based track and field competition in Southern Division 1 of the Young Athletes League and the junior sections of the Southern Women’s League. Throughout the year we offer entry to County, and for the very best, to national competitions.

Youth Age Limits

Amateur Athletics Association rules generally forbid under-11s in traditional competition. It is our policy to encourage multi-event training for all under 13s. For under-11s we are working with Lottery funded “Active Sports” to expand provision of sportshall in east London. Sportshall is fun indoor multi-event competition for under 13s which is quite safe for under 11s as well. Details of these competitions will be added to the website once agreed.

We expect parents to attend with children under 11 and do not encourage children under 9 to attend. To expand our activities for this age group we want more parents to get involved but you will be asked to complete our volunteer declaration form as part of our child protection policy.
