George Dodd
Victoria Park Harriers was fortunate back in 1974 when young Gary Dodd decided to join the club. For not only did Gary join, but his Dad George joined as well. Although Gary didn't remain on the scene very long, his Dad hung around for the next quarter of a century.
Almost from the beginning, George Dodd became an integral part of Victoria Park Harriers. Right away, he saw that he could make a positive contribution by getting timekeeping qualifications. Always guaranteed to be present at just about all races, George became indispensable.
When Dick Everson passed away in 1985, George officially became the Club's Chief Timekeeper. However, George didn't confine himself to just the art of the stopwatch. During his tenure with Victoria Park Harriers, he often served on the committee and, for a period of time, was the Club Treasurer.
For his services to the Club, George received two of the highest Club honours, the Club Presidency and Life Membership. In fact, he was made a Life Member before he had even reached 21 years with the Club, the normal time for consideration.
In 1999, George was presented with a plaque for his 25 years with Victoria Park Harriers.
George once said that if he ever were to lose his timekeeping abilities, he wanted to be told so he could stop in order to avoid embarrassing himself. George never waited for those words. He retired in early 2000, at the top.
Sadly, George passed away in August 2000 and now rests in the City of London Cemetery.
Thank you George, from all at Victoria Park Harriers, old and new, for all the great work you did for the Club over the years.
Wayne F. DuBose, Life Vice President
